The scientific journal that published a study by Facebook and two U.S. universities examining people's online mood swings regrets how the social experiment was handled.
In a note of contrition, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that the decision to manipulate the content appearing on the Facebook pages of about 700,000 people without their prior consent may have violated some principles of academic research.
The journal also pointed out that, as a for-profit company governed by its own terms of service, Facebook had no obligation to adhere to those scientific principles.
"It is nevertheless a matter of concern that the collection of the data by Facebook may have involved practices that were not fully consistent with the principles of obtaining informed consent and allowing participants to opt out," wrote Inder Verma, the Washington, D.C.-based journal's editor in chief.
The unusual "editorial expression of concern" surfaced Thursday, a day after Facebook Inc. Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg apologized, acknowledging that the world's largest social network should have done a better job communicating about the experiment.
Facebook allowed researchers to manipulate the content that appeared in the main section, or "news feed," of small fraction of the social network's nearly 1.3 billion users.
The data-scientists conducted the study during one week in January 2012. They were trying to collect evidence to prove their thesis that people's moods could spread like an "emotional contagion" depending on what they were reading.
Although their findings were published a month ago, the experiment didn't trigger outrage until the past few days, after blogs and essays in The New York Times and The Atlantic raised red flags about the ethics of treating people like laboratory rats without their permission.
Privacy regulators in the U.K. and France opened inquiries into whether Facebook may have violated any laws.
Facebook's data-use policy says the Menlo Park, California, company can deploy user information for "internal operations, including troubleshooting, data analysis, testing, research and service improvement."

With an appropriately cheeky name of Get Out of Jail Free Card, T-Mobile has announced that it will pay off early termination fees for customers who want to switch from other major carriers. This includes AT&T, Sprint and Verizon. The total value could be up to $650 per line when you add an eligible phone trade-in.
T-Mobile will pay up to $350 per line and another $300 for the device. This Get Out of Jail Free Card can add up to 5 lines or $650 per line. T-Mobile claims that a family for four can then save 1,880 over two years versus other carriers because of its more aggressive rates. T-Mobile says it will even help switchers draft their break-up letter online.

Here at CES, T-Mobile also announced that its 4G LTE network is the fastest in the U.S., now reaching 209 million people in 273 markets. The provider did its own testing using Speedtest.net, and it came out on top, with Sprint coming in last.

To help enhance it’s network, T-Mobile says it’s rolling out its Wideband LTE service to deliver even faster speeds using 20 + 20 MHz LTE technology. We’re talking 147 Mbps peak downloads. This service will start in Dallas. In fact, T-Mobile claims that its speeds are more than twice than fast as AT&T Uverse home service.

T-Mobile has debuted a few devices with Wideband LTE capability, including the LG G Flex, Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 and Sony Xperia Z1s. More are likely to come soon.

During its press event, T-Mobile announced that it added more customers than every other carrier combined in Q4 in 2013–1.6 million–thanks to the momentum of its Uncarrier strategy. In 2013, T-Mobile got rid of contracts, introduced its Jump phone upgrade plan and allowed customers to use data overseas for no extra charge.

As per usual, T-Mobile CEO John Legere took shots at the competition, but he backed up the bluster by announcing 4.4 million customers added in 2013. According to Legere, this makes T-Mobile the fastest growing wireless provider. T-Mobile also promised to improve coverage in rural and suburban areas, which has been a weakness.

The U.S. Defense Department wants to arm more drones with lightweight, precision-guided weapons to support a larger range of combat missions.

As the war in Afghanistan ends and new threats emerge in the Asia-Pacific region, the Pentagon is considering adapting multiple weapons for drones, including the Cold War-era Hydra 70 rocket and the Laser Homing Attack or Anti-Tank Missile, or LAHAT, according to its latest report on the future of unmanned systems.

“Unmanned systems can be used in significantly different operating and threat conditions than manned platforms, come in a much wider range of classes and sizes than manned systems, can exhibit greater persistence and endurance than manned systems, and have the potential to support a large range of mission sets,” the recently released report states.

The 168-page document, “Unmanned Systems Integrated Roadmap: FY2013-2038,” outlines the department’s long-term strategy for adopting the technology and was approved by Frank Kendall, the Pentagon’s top weapons buyer, and Navy Adm. James Winnefeld, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
The Pentagon plans to spend almost $24 billion on unmanned air, ground and maritime systems over the next five years through fiscal 2018, according to the document. While research and development funding for drones is expected to fall by $1.3 billion — more than a third — from fiscal 2013 to fiscal 2014, overall spending on the technology is expected to total at least $4.1 billion in the fiscal year that began Oct. 1.
As the department develops systems that can operate in contested areas such as the Asia-Pacific, it’s trying to find ways to arm its nearly 11,000 aerial drones with existing weapons.

The Laser Homing Attack or Anti-Tank Missile, or LAHAT (Hebrew for “incandescence”), is a 3-foot-long, 30-pound projectile made by the Israel Aerospace Industries. A complete launcher houses four of the missiles. Initially developed for 105mm and 120mm tank guns, the weapon can hit targets from more than six miles away and has been tested on the RQ-5 Hunter drone, according to the Pentagon report.

The so-called SPIKE missile was developed by the U.S. Navy and Italy’s Finmeccanica SpA’s DRS Technologies unit as a portable weapon for Marines and Navy SEALs, according to the report. The 2-foot-long, 5-pound laser-guided missile could also be used to defense ships from swarms of small boats or aircraft, and it has undergone testing on DRS’s Sentry HP drone at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., the document states.

Even the Hydra 70 rocket, a longtime staple on attack helicopters such as the AH-64 Apache and a weapon that dates to the Korean War, is finding new life aboard unmanned aerial vehicles. The 3.5-foot-long, 13.5-pound rockets made by General Dynamics Corp. have been fired from a Vigilante drone developed by SAIC Inc. in a test at the U.S. Army’s Yuma Proving Ground.

The Pentagon plans to arm unmanned helicopters with Hydra 70 rockets as part of the so-called Advanced Precision Weapon Kill System, which is designed to fill a gap between Hellfire missiles and unguided Hydra rockets. The Navy last year began arming the the MQ-8B Fire Scout helicopter drone with the system, which uses a launcher originally developed for the Army’s canceled Comanche attack helicopter.

The Army and Marine Corps are also looking at ways to further incorporate the 2-pound kamikaze drone called Switchblade and developed by AeroVironment Inc. The system can be launched by hand and fly directly into a target.

“Adapting proven weapons technology with new concepts to take advantage of unmanned systems persistence and emerging net-centric capability, manned and unmanned teaming will be critical to improving the sensor-to-shooter equation and further decreasing in the kill chain timeline,” the report states.

IBM's Watson supercomputer gets its own business

No, it's not Ken Jennings.

IBM announced Thursday that it's investing over $1 billion to give its Watson supercomputer its own business division and a new home in the heart of New York City.

The Armonk, N.Y.-based computing company said the new business unit will be dedicated to the development and commercialization of the project that first gained fame by defeating a pair of "Jeopardy!" champions, including 74-time winner Jennings, in 2011.

In the years since Watson's TV appearance, IBM has been developing the supercomputer for more practical purposes and changed it to a cloud-based service. Its massive data-crunching capabilities are currently being used in industries ranging from health care to banking.

IBM says Watson is unique because it it's programed like traditional computers. It has the ability to learn from its past experiences and factor that information into its future operations.

IBM CEO Ginni Rometty said that as a result, Watson is built for a world where big data is transforming every industry and every profession.

"Watson does more than find the needle in the haystack," Rometty said in remarks released ahead of the company's Thursday presentation. "It understands the haystack. It understands context."

As part of its investment, IBM is building a new headquarters for the business on the edge of New York City's East Village near New York University and other technology companies. About $100 million will go toward investing in startup companies that are building apps to be run through Watson.
Eventually the business, which started out as a team of 27 people, will employ about 2,000, including several hundred at the new headquarters, IBM said.

Michael Rhodin, a long-time IBM executive named to lead the new business, said the move marks the start of a new era for IBM and the new headquarters is meant to be a departure from the project's current research facility's sleepier surroundings about 40 miles north of the city in Yorktown Heights, N.Y.
The angular glass building also will stand out from the rest of its neighborhood, which is home to some of the oldest buildings in the city.

"The millennial generation gets this, they understand that this is," Rhodin said in an interview ahead of the announcement. "This is a departure. It's a statement on our part."

The will have marketing and sales capabilities, while also hosting engineering and development work and collaborations with customers and startup companies looking to utilize Watson's capabilities.

CES' Best Gems May Take Years to Materialize





 Curved televisions and 3D printers aside, a majority of the new super-tech products being unveiled at Las Vegas’ Consumer Electronics Show this week won’t hit store shelves this year.

The show is a great way to spark a conversation about the future of electronics, but the reality is it may take years for some of the most innovative products, such as driverless cars and intelligent eye contacts, to make it into regular consumers’ hands, if they ever do.

Data gatherer IHS (IHS) says that delay may play a part in stymieing the recovery of the consumer electronics market for another few years.

“Until these products enter the mainstream, traditional CE revenue will continue to dwindle,” said Jordan Selburn, senior principal analyst of IHS’s consumer devices division.

The analytics company on Wednesday predicted that the traditional consumer electronics market, which includes digital cameras, televisions and video game consoles, will face its fourth straight annual decline in 2014.

Worldwide consumer electronics manufacturing revenue is forecast to fall 2% to $250 billion this year from $255.7 billion in 2013, according to one of IHS’s industry trackers.

The decline is a testament to the fact that new innovations such as mobile devices are replacing traditional technologies, but also that new tech such as Samsung’s 8K TVs, which have twice the pixels of today’s 4K ultra-high-def televisions, will take some time to reach the market.

“While exciting new technologies such as UHD and wearable devices are being shown at CES, it will take a few years until these products attain enough of a volume to drive the growth of the overall CE market,” Selburn said.

Of course, that shouldn’t diminish the wild success mobile devices have had over the last few years, or the expected surge in 4K TVs, which are still pretty new despite Samsung’s surprise 8K TV unveiling at CES.
The smartphone and tablet market surpassed traditional consumer electronic devices for the first time ever in 2013, with shipments topping 1 billion. And IHS predicts that shipments of ultra-high-def televisions will skyrocket by 500% in 2014 from 1.5 million last year and reach 38.5 million in 2018.

At the same time, Samsung, Sony (SNE) and Google (GOOG) are among the tech giants trying to revolutionize the wearables market -- another hot topic at CES 2014 -- by connecting souped-up glasses and watches to mobile devices.

While IHS sees global market shipments of wearable devices climbing by 155% to 130.7 million units through 2018, it may take at least another few years until you see droves of consumers talking to their wrists or taking pictures with their eyelids.

Just look at Google, which first confirmed its Google Glass project in April 2012.
The company has released the device to developers and media but has yet to confirm when the highly-anticipated device will be available to regular people, though recent reports have put the potential launch in April 2014.

iWatch development reportedly hit by battery, display and manufacturing issues






Development of Apple’s expected iWatch is apparently presenting the tech giant’s engineers with a series of unexpected challenges, suggesting its release is still some way down the road.

Although it could still appear later this year, a report from The Information claims “a few apparent setbacks” have up to now been a source of concern for the Cupertino company as it seeks to develop a smartwatch it hopes can make an impact in the wearable tech space.

So what exactly is troubling the boffins at Apple? According to the news site, the design team is having a hard time deciding on a screen technology for the device, a problem apparently related to battery issues.
Presumably this means the displays the team has experimented with so far have been too power hungry. Launching a smartwatch with decent battery life is one of the major challenges facing all manufacturers building such a device, with Apple reportedly keen to create a high-tech watch that can offer at least four days of use on a single charge.

Another hint that things are not going as smoothly as they might comes with The Information’s claim that Apple ended advanced prototyping of the iWatch with an unnamed manufacturer just a few months ago.
Finally, the project is likely to have been impacted to some extent by the loss of an important member of the iWatch development team, Bryan James, who recently left the tech company for home automation firm Nest.
Of course, snags and challenges are par for the course when it comes to developing any new piece of kit, but the fact that some had expected Apple to launch its iWatch last year could point to bigger-than-expected problems with its development.

However, with a team of more than 100 reported to be working on the device, and Apple able to hire some of the world’s top talent, we certainly aren’t about to see the tech titan throw in the towel on its

much-anticipated iWatch. But with a slew of companies pulling the wraps of a variety of headline-grabbing smartwatches and other wearable tech at this week’s CES, Apple won’t want to leave it too long till launch day.

Struggling smartphone maker BlackBerry said Friday it was suing a company founded by TV’s Ryan Seacrest over a slip-on keyboard accessory for the iPhone that offers BlackBerry-like functionality to the Apple gadget.

Typo Products LLC, founded by entrepreneur Laurence Hallier and media personality Seacrest, said that their first accessory, the Typo Keyboard, would be available for pre-order this month. Blackberry said that won’t fly.

“This is a blatant infringement against BlackBerry’s iconic keyboard, and we will vigorously protect our intellectual property against any company that attempts to copy our unique design,” said Steve Zipperstein, BlackBerry's general counsel and chief legal officer.

“From the beginning, BlackBerry has always focused on offering an exceptional typing experience that combines a great design with ergonomic excellence. We are flattered by the desire to graft our keyboard onto other smartphones, but we will not tolerate such activity without fair compensation.”

The device has been widely described as a way to turn an iPhone into a BlackBerry. A late December review of the Typo Keyboard case on CNET, for example, was titled “Hands -on with case that turns your iPhone into a BlackBerry.”

The product is set to debut at the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Your TV is about to become more like your tablet or your smartphone. A company named Roku showed off their new TV at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas.

The Roku TV aims to merge online TV with cable TV. Roku is known for making affordable set top boxes that bring online streaming content to your television. Now they want to take the technology from their boxes and put it straight inside your television.

Roku announced the news at The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The show officially kicks off this week but this announcement makes it clear that battle for control of your television is going to be front and center in Sin City.

I've long been a fan of Roku's set top boxes. When they burst on the scene in 2008 they were one of the only ways to bring Netflix streaming to your living room. Over time, Roku added a slew of apps to the boxes like FOX News but the problem with that model is that there are so many other ways to do that. Think about how smart TV's, video game consoles, and Apple TV can all do the same or similar functions. In this competitive market Roku must have known that a little box that sits next to the TV wouldn't cut it anymore; they had to go inside the TV.

At launch Roku TV will partner with Hisense and TCL. The company says it will be available this Fall in screen sizes ranging from 32" to 55".

How to keep your private information out of the hands of others

Let's be honest: Most of us prefer not to think about who watches what we do on the Internet. What's the harm, some may think, if someone's looking at my family pictures on Facebook?
Well, there may be a lot of harm. Do you want everyone in the world to see pictures of your kids? That you're on a family camping trip and not at home? Do you want advertisers vacuuming up details from your family's social-media accounts? How about a potential cyberthief cobbling together enough of your personal information to steal your identity?
And that's not to mention the other snoops, from the NSA on down, who might decide one of your Tweets or Facebook postings is "interesting."
Scammers, hackers, marketers, spies and identity thieves - together they could make anyone want to surf the Web privately. Here are a few ways to live in our digital world without staying up at night.
First of all, you need to keep your computer free of viruses - programs you inadvertently download that could share your information with hackers. AVG or avast! are good places to start for free antivirus protection. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy target adware and spyware.
Next, note that every major browser has an "incognito" or "private browsing" mode. That's one line of defense against advertisers that track where you go, or snoops who get on your computer. In most browsers, Control + Shift + P will bring up a private browsing window. (In Chrome browsers, Control + Shift + N brings up the "incognito" window.)
Another tip: No matter what you do, you leave a lot of information behind on your computer. Your browser has a record of what you've been looking at and what you've downloaded. It also keeps those "cookies" you've heard about.
Some cookies are useful, and some are troubling. A program like CCleaner, a well-reviewed cleaning program, will keep unwanted cookies and other junk off your computer.
Are you worried about someone snooping in your email? Not only does the technology exist, some companies already do it. Gmail users, for example, are used to seeing, say, dog-related ads next to their email window if they've been discussing pooches with a friend. That's done automatically and, to be fair, that's the price you pay for using Google's powerful email service for free.
To be as secure as possible against other prying eyes, try using a program called PGP – that's short for Pretty Good Privacy. (The name is modest – if used correctly, the program should keep your email private from everything but government-level decryption.) It does require some effort and the cooperation of friends and family.

Next step is to keep your Web browsing private. I told you earlier how to keep it safe from advertisers and snoops with private browsing, but that won't stop your Internet provider and dedicated hackers.
The best way to keep it safe from them is to use what is called a Web "proxy." Tor is the most famous of these. With Tor, each site you visit is sent though a relay of volunteer servers. No one on either end of the connection can see what Web sites you're visiting.
But you can also go with a private company that offers a so-called "VPN," or virtual private network. These can run you $40 or $50 a year, and require a bit of setup, as well, but can be useful in a lot of ways.
Besides keeping your Web surfing private, a VPN lets you watch TV broadcasts in the U.S. while you're traveling in other countries. But they are also very valuable for those of us who travel and are at the mercy of sometimes-unsecure local Wi-Fi networks; they will keep your email and chats private with encrypted communication.
Now, as we've seen from the recent revelations about the National Security Agency's spying, a determined government agency can break many of these defenses. So, don't think you can get away with anything illegal. But against many of the usual suspects - marketers, identity thieves and the like - these tips will make the Internet a much more secure place for you.
